The Avengers raid a Hydra base in Sokovia commanded by Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, who has been experimenting on humans using Loki's scepter. They retrieve the scepter and also discover that Strucker had been conducting experiments with the orphan twins Pietro Maximoff, who has super speed, and Wanda Maximoff, who can control minds and project energy.
Tony Stark discovers an artificial intelligence in the scepter and convinces Bruce Banner to secretly help him to transfer it to his Ultron defense system. However, the Ultron program becomes sentient and decides that it is necessary to annihilate mankind in order to save the planet. It attacks the Avengers and flees to Sokovia with the scepter. It builds an armature for self-protection and robots for his army and teams up with the twins, who hold Stark responsible for their parents' deaths.
The Avengers go to Clint Barton's house to recover, but out of the blue, Nick Fury arrives and convinces them to fight against Ultron. They track him down to Seoul, where he is trying to use the scepter's gem to create a synthetic human body for himself. They manage to capture the body but are confronted by Ultron and the twins. Wanda abandons Ultron after discovering his plan to destroy humanity with a meteor made from Sokovia's landmass. The Avengers take the body back to their headquarters and upload J.A.R.V.I.S., Stark's loyal A.I., into it. The resulting being is called Vision, who joins forces with the Avengers.
The final battle takes place in Sokovia, where Ultron has activated his machine to lift a large part of the city skyward. The Avengers fight against Ultron's army while Fury arrives in a Helicarrier with Maria Hill, James Rhodes and S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to evacuate civilians. Pietro dies when he shields Barton from gunfire. A grieving Wanda abandons her post to destroy Ultron's primary body in revenge, which allows one of his drones to activate the machine. The city plummets but Stark and Thor overload the machine and shatter the landmass. Hulk rescues Romanoff from falling debris and then flees in a Quinjet while being pursued by Ultron's drone. Vision confronts Ultron's last remaining body and destroys it.
Avengers: Age of Ultron received mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. It grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide, making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2015 and the eighth-highest-grossing film of all time. It received praise for its action sequences, visual effects, humor, and performances, especially those of Downey, Ruffalo, Evans, Johansson, Spader, and Bettany. However, it also received some criticism for its pacing, story, villain, and lack of character development.
The film's title is a reference to the comic book storyline "Age of Ultron", which was published in 2013 and featured a dystopian future where Ultron had conquered the world.
The film marks the first appearance of the Vision, a founding member of the Avengers in the comics. He is portrayed by Paul Bettany, who also voiced J.A.R.V.I.S. in the previous Iron Man and Avengers films.
The film introduces two new Avengers: Pietro and Wanda Maximoff, also known as Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. They are portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen, who previously starred together as husband and wife in Godzilla (2014).
The film features several cameo appearances by other MCU characters, such as Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Heimdall (Idris Elba), Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), and Stan Lee.
The film sets up several plot points for future MCU films, such as the Infinity Stones, the Civil War between Iron Man and Captain America, the Ragnarok of Asgard, and the emergence of Thanos as the main antagonist.
